Salma, Latakia in Syria (agencies): Al-Eido Mosque in Salma, Latakia was officially inaugurated on 30 January 2026 by the Governor of Latakia, Muhammad Ahmad Osman, marking a significant moment as the call to prayer (adhan) was heard once again after more than a decade of damage caused by the conflict in Syria.
The prolonged conflict has resulted in severe destruction of community institutions such as mosques, schools, and learning centres, undermining social structures, cultural identity, and the psychosocial well-being of local communities.
Al-Eido Mosque was among the institutions heavily affected by the conflict. The rehabilitation project goes beyond physical reconstruction, aiming to restore essential social, religious, and educational functions much needed by the community in Salma.
According to Khalid Amru, Director of Waqf Latakia, the reopening of the mosque carries deep significance for the local community. He expressed his appreciation to Syria Care and the people of Malaysia for their support, and noted that rehabilitation works are also currently underway at a school located in the nearby hillside area.
The total cost of the Al-Eido Mosque rehabilitation amounted to RM92,350.80, made possible through collaboration with HUMAM Relief and Pertubuhan Ghulam Al-Dakwah Selangor. The project is hoped to serve as a symbol of the revival of community institutions in post-conflict Syria.
