THIS year’s Malaysian Press Dinner 2009 is off to a great start as more than 40 corporate and individual contributors have come forward with contributions.
The contributions in the form of cash and cheques amounted to nearly RM326,000, excluding donations from Petronas.
The organising chairman of the dinner, Datuk Chamil Wariya, announced the names of the contributors and their pledged amount at a Contribution Giving ceremony held at Istana Hotel on March 31.
Petronas is the highest contributor with RM200,000. The money will be given out as cash prizes to the winners of the Malaysian Journalism Prize 2008.
UEM Group Bhd pledged RM30,000 while Sapura Holdings Sdn Bhd pledged another RM17,500.
The rest of the donations are in the form of RM10,000, RM7,500 and RM5,000.
The dinner has been organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) since 1980 and Petronas has been a contributor since 1994.
“We rely on these contributions to make this dinner a success. It is our way of honouring and crediting those who deserve to win,” said Chamil.
There are 13 categories being contested and so far the institute has received 471 submissions from the print, broadcast and the new media as well.
The winner of the grand prize, the Kajai award will receive RM24,000 and a gold medal worth RM10,000. The prizes for all other categories are RM11,000.
The independent panel of 26 judges will be headed by Professor Dr Mohd Safar Hasim from the media and communications studies faculty of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
About 800 guests are expected at the dinner on April 6 at Istana Hotel.
