Covid-19: Eight new cases Saturday (Aug 22) with five local transmissions from Tawar cluster, says Health DG


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded eight new Covid-19 cases as of Saturday (Aug 22), bringing the total infections in the country to 9,257.

Out of the eight new cases, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said three were imported cases, while the rest were local transmissions.

The imported cases involved one Malaysian and two foreigners.

In the local transmission cases, Dr Noor Hisham said all five cases were from the Tawar cluster in Kedah.

To date, Dr Noor Hisham said there were a total of 63 positive Covid-19 cases from this cluster, with 52 cases from Kedah and 11 cases in Penang.

As of Saturday, 2,942 people from the Tawar cluster have been screened, with 2,414 people screened in Kedah while 517 were tested in Penang.

He noted that all 11 persons screened in Perak tested negative.

"There are eight positive Covid-19 cases that are being treated in intensive care units (ICU), and four cases require ventilator support," he said in a statement Saturday (Aug 22).

He also said that there were currently 183 active cases in the country.

Dr Noor Hisham added that four patients have been discharged bringing the total cumulative number of discharged cases to 8,949.

He also said no deaths were recorded, keeping the death toll at 125.
