PUTRAJAYA: Stern action will be taken against those who violate the movement control order (MCO) or fail to cooperate with authorities, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The Senior Minister said that the police would be sterner and uncompromising when taking action against MCO violators, especially since it has been extended until April 28.
"Those who fail to abide by the MCO will be detained and charged in court under Section 34 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1988.
"The first offence carries not more than two years' jail, or a fine, or both upon conviction. The second offence carries not more than five years' jail, or a fine, or both upon conviction," he told a press conference on Saturday (April 11).
Ismail Sabri said those who fail to cooperate with any civil servant, including Health Ministry personnel, would be dealt with strictly as well.
"They can detained and charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code for preventing civil servants from discharging their duties.
"If convicted, the culprit can be sentenced to a maximum of two years' jail, or fined up to RM10,000, or both," he said.
On Friday (April 10), a total of 1,095 people were detained for not adhering to the MCO, he added.
"From those arrested, 815 were issued with RM1,000 compounds, 242 remanded while 38 were released on police bail.
"Since March 18 until April 10, a total of 7,759 people have been arrested and 373 people were charged," Ismail Sabri said.
A total of 779 roadblocks had been set up nationwide, with 490,249 vehicles checked.
"The authorities have also conducted 47,949 spot checks nationwide while 5,028 premises were inspected as well," he said.
