IN AN airy, single-storey workshop in Weifang, Shandong province, seamstresses sit behind sewing machines, surrounded by piles of colourful fabric.

Their hands move fast as the needles punch through the synthetic fabrics. The results of their labour – kites in various shapes and designs – line the walls.
