Good response to free JB health hub

The Wellness Hub Johor Baru is open to Malaysian citizens aged 17 and above.

MOH-managed centre patronised by office workers, housewives and senior citizens

A HEALTH and wellness centre in Johor has been getting good response from locals since opening in September 2023.

According to Wellness Hub Johor Baru information officer Nur Nadzmeen Atilia Zairuddin, 70% of the clients are women.

She said 4pm to 6pm was the busiest period at the centre, with office workers and housewives making use of the facilities, while pensioners and senior citizens normally visited in the morning.

“We focus on health intervention programmes to build lifelong healthy practices,” Nur Nadzmeen, 27, told StarMetro.

She said those registered to use the free facilities were referred to as “clients”, instead of “members”.

The centre is the first and only community-based health and wellness centre managed by Health Ministry (MOH).

It acts as a one-stop centre to help the local community adopt a healthy lifestyle through free services and facilities.

It is open to Malaysian citizens aged 17 and above.

Nur Nadzmeen said the oldest client presently was aged 80.

The centre’s coach, Mohamad Haikal Mohd Rafi, 24, said new registrants would have to undergo a body composition test first.

He said it broke down total body weight into core physical parts: fat mass and fat-free (lean) mass which includes muscle, bone, organs and water.

“Two people can be the exact same height and weight, yet muscle and fat look and feel different depending on whether that weight is mostly fat or muscle,” he said.

He advised registrants to be open-minded and to aim for better health rather than focusing on weight loss.

“Never give up if your weight stays the same after working out,” he said, noting that people often think they are not progressing when their actual body shape has completely changed.

He said most people were a mix of three body types: ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph, which can change with age, diet and exercise.

Meanwhile, 60-year-old Tan Yong Hee from Taman Impian Emas in Johor Baru said he saw the centre after donating blood at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) Blood Donation Centre one day.

Curious, Tan who is a co-partner of a restaurant, decided to check it out.

“After looking around and talking to the staff, I signed up. I will start using the facilities next week,” he said.

Tan, who has no major health issues, said he would probably coax some of his friends to sign up too.

“I’m giving myself about three months to build a moderate amount of lean muscle,” he said.

The centre is located at JKR 938, Jalan Mahmoodiah, HSA, and is open weekdays from 8am to 6pm.
