Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) has enforced limited-duration parking in selected areas within its administrative zone starting this month.
Iskandar Puteri mayor Datuk Hasrin Kamal Hashim said the implementation of the two-hour parking system was introduced following numerous complaints.
“The complaints are on the issue of parking spaces being monopolised by cross-border workers in Singapore,” he told StarMetro after the MBIP full board meeting at Menara MBIP in Medini Sentral.
He said Malaysians commuting to work in Singapore had been monopolising public and commercial parking lots in Iskandar Puteri and other Johor suburbs for 14 to 16 hours daily.
Unofficial statistics show roughly 400,000 to 480,000 workers cross the Johor Causeway and Second Link daily to Singapore.
While about 69,000 Malaysian-registered motorcycles enter Singapore every day, many others park their cars in commercial areas or near transport hubs to take the train or bus across the border.
“Local businesses and market traders report declining sales because customers cannot find parking spots and avoid the congested commercial areas,” Hasrin Kamal said.
The locations selected for the two-hour parking system are: at Jalan Pahlawan 1, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Jalan Camar and Jalan Persisiran Perlin, Taman Perling, Taman Bukit Indah’s Jalan Indah 15/1, 15/2 and 15/3, Medan Nusa Perintis as well as Taman Nusa Perintis in Gelang Patah.
He said parking bays painted red had a two-hour limit, which are enforced from Monday to Saturday, from 8am to 6pm.
The parking fee is RM0.60 per hour (RM1.20 maximum).
Hasrin Kamal reminded users to pay for parking and to adhere to the time limits.
“Daily passes are not valid in the restricted zones, while monthly passes only allow vehicles to be parked for a maximum of two hours,” he said.
“Vehicles will be towed if parked beyond the time limit. Obstructing and abandoned vehicles would also be removed.”
