TRAFFIC lights at the Jalan Rakan Cheras T-junction connecting to Jalan Sungai Long have been extended by 40 seconds.
Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) councillor Lim Kim Eng said technical problems with the traffic lights over the past few months had caused severe congestion there.
“Previously, vehicles exiting Jalan Rakan Cheras had a green light for 50 seconds, but now it is 70 seconds.
“The traffic light allowing vehicles coming into Jalan Rakan Cheras from Jalan Sungai Long on the other side used to have a green light for 20 seconds, which has now been increased to 40 seconds,” she said during a site visit.
Lim said the measures were to ease congestion as a temporary measure while a road widening project along 550m of Jalan Rakan Cheras was scheduled to begin next month.
“From the present two-lane dual carriageway, it will become a four-lane dual carriageway.”
She said the RM2mil project, financed by MPKj development fund, was approved last month.
“To expedite the project’s start, I appeal to everyone who has placed obstructions on road reserves to remove them immediately.
“I see that there are some who have built car shelters and placed tables in areas that will be involved in the road widening works.
“MPKj will issue notices but it is best for the owner to remove it themselves,” Lim added.
Taman Rakan Residents Association deputy chairman Mohd Zamzuri Abu Othman said there had been a slight improvement in the movement of traffic since the traffic light timings were adjusted earlier this month.
“However, the area is still very congested during peak hours.
“We hope the road widening project can be completed fast,” he said.
