Target reached for Ipoh teen’s surgery

teenager Lew Wen Di, who has epilepsy, will have a chance at a better future as the fundraising target for his life-changing surgery has been achieved.

Ipoh-based single mother Liew Yoke Fong, 52, said donations for her 18-year-old son had reached RM120,000 and thanked generous members of the public for making it happen.

The money will cover the cost for a stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), a surgical procedure on the brain, to be conducted at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, as well as for other medical expenses.

“I was anxious about raising the funds but am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support and generosity of the public.

“I would not have been able to afford the treatment on my own,” she said in a statement issued by Community Care Enrichment Programme (CCEP) Foundation.

“I’m truly grateful to everyone who supported us,” said Liew.

“This fundraising journey has shown us how much love and care people have for Wen Di,” she said.

It was reported that the teenager had been battling epilepsy since the age of two.

Liew had quit her job to care for her son as well as her elderly mother who has dementia.

CCEP Foundation chief executive officer Yvonne Yee said the surgery was expected to take place in August.

“The doctor in charge of Wen Di’s case had initially planned to schedule the surgery at the end of this year or early next year,” she said.

“After we updated the doctor on Wen Di’s condition and his mother’s concerns, the hospital agreed to review the schedule,” Yee added.
