MOSQUES and surau in Kedah must never become platforms for politics or activities that sow seeds of division.

The Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin said political elements must be kept away, whether in speeches, lectures or informal discussions that could create tension.

“Political programmes by any party in any form at mosque and surau are not allowed,” he said in his address at “Seminar Pemerkasaan Institusi Masjid Negeri Kedah Darul Aman 2026” held at Kompleks Lembaga Zakat Negeri Kedah in Alor Setar.

Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah, who is also Kedah Islamic Religious Council (MAIK) president, said harmony within mosques must always be preserved to ensure a peaceful and united society.

He stressed that mosque management committees must carry out their duties with professionalism, competence and integrity, while financial management must be transparent and orderly.

“Any form of abuse of power or negligence that could undermine public confidence in mosque institutions should be avoided.”

He said the state Islamic Affairs Department (JHEAIK) was required to provide guidance and establish clear regulations to assist mosque management committees in understanding and implementing financial guidelines issued on Sept 1, 2022.

Mosque officials must also comply with guidelines set by state religious authorities, including use of loudspeakers.

The Raja Muda said the azan should use external loudspeakers, while lectures and talks should use internal systems at suitable sound levels that would not disturb the surrounding communities.

“Use the available facilities wisely while considering public sensitivities.”

Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah urged mosque institutions to expand their roles in education, welfare, youth development and economic activities.

He cited Masjid Al Busyra in Merbok and Masjid Sharifah Fatimah in Jitra as examples of mosques carrying out economic programmes such as business site rentals, laundrettes and food events to benefit local communities.

He said mosques should embrace digital platforms and social media for dakwah efforts, but warned against online quarrels and fake news.

Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah also called on administrators of social media platforms to monitor and remove negative comments that could damage the reputation of mosque institutions.
