MBSJ turns to AI to tackle snarling mess

SUBANG Jaya’s busy Bulatan Kewajipan is set for high-tech transformation as Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) prepares to improve traffic flow with traffic lights powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

The roundabout, located at the intersection of Persiaran Kewajipan and New Pantai Expressway (NPE), is a primary gateway for motorists travelling into and out of the SS, USJ and Bandar Sunway neighbourhoods in Subang Jaya.

“The project involves installing three sets of traffic lights to control traffic flow from four directions: SS12, SS13, SS14 and SS15.

“This will reduce vehicle conflict points as well as facilitate more orderly and systematic traffic movement,” said a MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department spokesperson.

According to the local authority, physical works are expected to take six months, starting in July this year with completion targeted for December.

“Sunway Group will fully fund and construct the project to comply with development conditions and improve local infrastructure,” the spokesperson said, although the exact cost was not disclosed.

“Participating authorities include MBSJ, Malaysian Highway Authority, NPE and Public Works Department.”

The AI-based smart system is expected to alleviate peak-hour gridlock by distributing wait times more efficiently.

It also aims to reduce accidents by preventing motorists from competing to enter the roundabout.

The spokesperson added that the upgrade would also address congestion attributed to vehicles queueing for student pick-ups at a nearby international school.

“The plan includes reorganising traffic flow into and out of the school area, improving road geometry and widening lanes at key locations.” added the spokesperson.

“With the implementation of the smart traffic light system, traffic flow is expected to be managed in a more streamlined and smooth way.”

Beyond the roundabout, the spokesperson said other proposals included upgraded U-turn facilities near Subang Jaya Medical Centre and a proposed flyover connecting Jalan Lagoon Selatan to the Subang-Kelana Link.

MBSJ stated that it remains committed to upgrading infrastructure and traffic management to enhance urban mobility for Subang Jaya residents.
