SELANGOR has achieved 73% of its 11 million tree-planting target.
State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said 8,050,011 trees had been planted to date.
“The Selangor Forestry Department (JPNS) recorded 2,502,911 trees planted, while local authorities and the district land offices accounted for 5,547,100 trees of various species.
“JPNS and Selangor Climate Change Adaptation Centre (SCAC) will coordinate plantings carried out by public and private universities, schools and government agencies to track overall progress,” she said during the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.
She was replying to a question from Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar (PH-Batu Tiga) regarding the tree-planting programme’s status.
Jamaliah said the state’s permanent forest reserve coverage was currently at 31.7%.
“The programme extends beyond reforestation to include the greening of urban areas, riverbanks and coastal regions.
“To ensure the continuity of this green agenda, the state government has set new targets for 2026.
“Every local authority, district office and government agency is urged to plant about 100,000 trees this year to achieve the overall target of 11 million trees.”
She said JPNS focused on planting trees like merawan siput jantan, geronggang derum, meranti rambai daun and merbau.
Local councils and district offices would focus on ornamental and landscape trees such as bunga tanjung, tecoma, ixora, cempaka kuning and hibiscus, she said.
“JPNS also focuses on monitoring and maintaining high-risk or hazardous trees, particularly within Permanent Forest Reserves.
“Meanwhile, local authorities use the National Landscape Guidelines Edition 2.0, developed by the National Landscape Department, to guide the selection of suitable landscape species and recommended maintenance methods for trees under their care,” she said.
