THE declining involvement of youth in social and volunteer work is concerning, an elected leader says.

“As such, activities are crucial in nurturing a generation equipped with life skills and leadership qualities,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

He said participation in organisations such as Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) offered valuable and holistic exposure for youngsters’ personal development.

Experience gained through volunteerism helped cultivate discipline, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility, he said, noting that trends indicated a decline in youth participation in outdoor activities, compared to previous generations who were more actively involved in sports and uniformed bodies.

“Many young people today prefer to spend their time at home after school.

“Participation in outdoor group activities is decreasing, and this is an issue that needs to be addressed,” he said after launching MRCS Sibu 2026 Annual Flag Sale at Sibu Central Market.

Chieng commended the commitment of volunteer teams, particularly MRCS Sibu which offers assistance during emergencies such as fires and floods.

“In many situations, volunteers are among the first to step forward to provide aid, highlighting the vital role they play within the community.

“Involvement in volunteer work goes beyond acquiring technical skills, as it also nurtures leadership and teamwork.”

He urged the public to continue supporting MRCS Sibu via donations for it to continue its work and train more young people in first aid and character development.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference.

“It not only provides financial support but also strengthens the spirit of unity within the community,” said Chieng.
