240 upgrade locations identified for programme

Kuala Lumpur hawker facilities are set for a major facelift, with 240 locations identified for infrastructure upgrades under the Lestari Niaga programme.

Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud (pic) said the locations were identified through a census conducted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The move, he said, was expected to benefit 10,000 traders by providing modernised facilities.

“This is in line with the proposal by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to ensure that these hawkers operate in a comfortable environment,” he said at a press conference on the 50% rental reduction for DBKL hawker sites and premises at Pusat Penjaja Bandar Tasik Permaisuri.

Lestari Niaga (sustainable business) is a government initiative aimed at upgrading and beautifying trading spaces for petty traders and hawkers in Kuala Lumpur.

Fadlun said the first phase of Lestari Niaga would involve 120 locations, reported Bernama.

“The remaining 120 locations will be implemented in the second phase, which we will carry out immediately after the public infrastructure has been repaired,” he added.

DBKL, he said, had appointed 61 contractors for the repairing and upgrading works expected to begin after Hari Raya.

On the issue of Ramadan bazaar site rentals having been sublet to third parties, Fadlun said DBKL had taken action against 17 hawkers, resulting in the immediate closure of their businesses.
