AS Chinese New Year celebrations draw to a close and with the month of Ramadan well under way, the Chinese Muslim community in Bayan Lepas, Penang, has embraced traditions of both cultures, highlighting the beauty of unity in diversity.

About 200 members of the community broke fast at a Chinese New Year event organised by the Penang chapter of the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (Macma) at SK Mutiara Perdana.

Macma Penang chairman Ooi Chooi Beng said the event reflected the shared identity and values held by Chinese Muslims.

“Although this is Ramadan, we are still Chinese.

“This event bridges two cultures, but shares one common value of togetherness and love,” he said during the event.

Ooi says the event reflected the shared identity and values held by Chinese Muslims.

Ooi noted that the observance of Ramadan and Chinese New Year reinforced essential values.

“For Muslims, Ramadan is a month of educating the soul and teaching patience, empathy and love.

“When we fast, we learn to feel the hardships of others.

“It shapes us into more compassionate and caring people for society regardless of religion and race,” he said.

At the same time, he said, Chinese New Year brought a message of renewal, new hope and closer family relationships.

“It reminds us that every year is an opportunity to become a better person,” he added.

Ooi said that the event symbolised unity built through shared experiences.

“We may have different backgrounds, but we share the same homeland.

“We may have different beliefs, but we share the same human values of respect, love and tolerance,” he said.

The event, where most attendees were dressed in traditional red attire, was filled with Chinese cultural music.

After Maghrib prayers, guests were treated to a buffet spread.

Highlights included a storytelling session on Chinese Muslim culture, lucky draw and presentation of rewards to high-performing and underprivileged pupils.

Children also received traditional red packets.

Present at the event was Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz.
