PENANG is shaping up to be a major hotspot for the Year of the Horse, having been named a top global destination for 2026 by CNN and the New York Times.
With diners and holidaymakers known for making last-minute plans, the state’s food and hospitality sectors remain cautiously optimistic of a festive pickup in the days leading up to Chinese New Year which begins on Feb 17.
Penang is already bracing for a significant influx of both domestic and international visitors.
Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh said hotel bookings statewide were expected to climb 80% or more with the approach of the festive period.
“The industry is relying more on local tourists, who make up about 70% of bookings, rather than international visitors, to fill rooms this festive season.
“Historically, we see bookings picking up very close to Chinese New Year, especially from the second to the fourth day, which are usually the peak days,” he said.
MAH represents 111 hotels with about 17,500 rooms across the state.
Restaurants too are preparing for a late surge, with many operators expecting diners to confirm their plans only in the final days before the celebrations.
Penang Koo Soo Kwong Choon Tong Restaurant and Tea Shop Association vice-president Datuk Vinah Yee said customers often delayed bookings because they were unable to confirm attendance numbers in advance.
She said the more than 40 restaurants under the association would remain open throughout the Chinese New Year period as operators had been encouraged to capitalise on what is traditionally the busiest time of the year.
“This is the time to make money. They can always take a break after Chap Goh Meh, when things return to normal,” she said.

As Chinese New Year draws closer, preparations are in full swing to usher in what some are calling a “horse-picious” festive season.
Visitors can soak up the Instagram-worthy atmosphere at The TOP Penang in Komtar, where eye-catching motifs in red and gold dominate the space, symbolising good fortune and happiness.
“This Year of the Horse represents strong momentum and rapid progress,” said The TOP Penang general manager Azrul Shah Mohamad.
“We hope all Malaysians will enjoy the festivities and usher in a successful year filled with good health, joy and prosperity.”
