Selangor landfill turnaround speeds up after road repairs, operational tweaks

PROLONGED heavy rain late last year is to blame for poor road conditions at Jeram, Kuala Selangor, and Tanjung Dua Belas, Kuala Langat, sanitary landfills in Selangor.

WorldWide Holdings Bhd (WHB), which manages both the landfills, said the downpours had affected internal road conditions and site movements at both sites, resulting in slower turnaround times for rubbish collection lorries.

“The impact was temporary and mainly linked to weather conditions.

“To address this, we carried out immediate road rectification and introduced operational adjustments to better manage vehicle flow, especially during peak hours,” WHB said in a statement.

“As conditions improved, traffic in the landfills returned to normal outside peak periods.

“The issue has since been addressed and we expect operational flow to continue improving going forward.”

The company was responding to KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir who cited bad road conditions in the landfills as one of the reasons for disruptions in waste collection in Selangor.

Meanwhile, WHB said it expected landfill traffic to ease once its waste-to-energy plants started diverting rubbish trucks.

“The Jeram WTE plant is currently undergoing testing and commissioning. It is expected to be completed by March.

“The Tanjung Dua Belas WTE plant is currently being constructed and is expected to be completed by 2027,” the company added.

The report also quoted Ramli as saying that the landfills lacked machinery to process rubbish, causing three-to four-hour delays when lorries queued up, especially if some machines broke down.

On this issue, WHB said the landfills were well-equipped to support current operations.

The company added that routine maintenance and operational measures helped minimise lorry turnaround times during peak hours and reduce disruptions when machines are down.

“We will continue monitoring the situation and work closely with KDEBWM to ensure smooth operations and reliable waste collection services,” it added.
