THE elderly were not forgotten as a local company reaffirmed a long-standing commitment to community welfare.

More than 3,000 senior citizens, including residents of four homes in Kuala Lumpur were beneficiaries at STM Lottery Sdn Bhd’s 39th Chinese New Year Ang Pow Donation Campaign at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur.

Launched by Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong, it was attended by Sports Toto Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Robin Tan, its chief executive officer Nerine Tan and STM Lottery Sdn Bhd executive director John Cheong.

Each beneficiary received an ang pow, mini hamper and mandarin oranges.

“What truly matters is the spirit behind this campaign – a spirit of compassion, gratitude and community,” said Robin.

“It is about remembering those who have paved the way for us, acknowledging their contributions and ensuring that they too feel the warmth and joy of Chinese New Year.”

Through STM Lottery’s Helping Hands programme, the six-day campaign allocated RM1.53mil to benefit 19,680 underprivileged senior citizens in 50 cities and towns.

Robin added: “Through our Helping Hands initiative, we remain committed to creating a meaningful and lasting impact, not only during festive seasons, but throughout the year through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes that support education, community welfare, environmental conservation and other areas of social development.”

Since its inception in 1988, the initiative has benefitted more than 494,230 underprivileged senior citizens with total contributions exceeding RM28.45mil.

In Sibu, some 350 senior citizens also received ang pow, mini festive hampers and mandarin oranges.

The distribution was officiated by STM Sarawak assistant regional manager Henry Liew, STM Sibu area sales officer Max Ching Chung Ming, and STM headquarters auditor Lim Wan Lin.
