MP flags traffic trials in Yong Peng

Dr Wee says traffic conditions in Yong Peng town have become severe during peak travel periods, especially at the signalised intersection.

Worsening congestion in the town of Yong Peng in Batu Pahat, Johor, will be forwarded for Works Ministry’s attention to find a long-term solution.

Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said traffic snarls at the Jalan Besar Yong Peng-Jalan Muar-Jalan Labis junction was severe.

“The situation has become increasingly serious, particularly during weekends and festive seasons, when vehicles often get stuck within the intersection,” he wrote in a social media post.

The MCA president said that he, along with councillors from Yong Peng District Council, spent two hours observing traffic movement at the signalised intersection.

Dr Wee said the main cause of the problem was a bottleneck at the three exit and entry ramps of Yong Peng North toll plaza off the North-South Highway.

He said space constraints at the toll ramps combined with lack of road widening disrupted traffic flow, creating backflow along Jalan Muar.

“The backflow affects vehicles heading towards Yong Peng town as well as those travelling in the direction of Parit Yaani.”

He said the combination of bottleneck and short distance between the junction and toll plaza, which was about 1.8km, worsened the traffic situation.

He hopes the ministry will consider measures such as road widening or improved ramp design to ease the bottleneck.
