COUNCILLOR Farhan Shah Ridzuan conducted a walk-through inspection at the low-cost PKNS Apartments in Kampung Lindungan, Petaling Jaya, Selangor to ensure a roof replacement was completed according to the project contract.

The inspection came two months after a storm struck in October, displacing the zinc roof of 12 Block 3 units in Jalan PJS6/4E.

The damage affected eight families, who were temporarily relocated to Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) community hall.

The MBPJ Commissioner of Buildings (CoB) had appointed a contractor to replace the storm-damaged zinc roof sheets.

Farhan, who is MBPJ Zone 24 councillor, said the walk-through was to confirm the job was done correctly and no further issues persisted.

“I did the walk-through with several residents – it is less about technical specifics and more about public accountability.”

He said the cost to replace the zinc roof sheets amounted to about RM10,000.

Zone 24 encompasses PJS5, PJS6 and parts of PJS7, PJS8 and PJS10 in Petaling Jaya.

Farhan said the roof replacement was completed within a few days, allowing the families to return home.

“All eight families moved back into the apartments, but I had to give it some time before doing the walk-through inspection.

“We needed time to ensure comprehensive feedback for any potential leakage during heavy rains and ensure the rafters were intact,” Farhan added.

He said replacement was done only for the damaged sections, as a complete roof refurbishment was planned next year.

“MBPJ CoB has applied to the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s Malaysian Housing Maintenance Fund for a RM500,000 allocation to replace zinc roofing for the five-storey walk-up flats of Block 3.”

Farhan also spoke to several residents including Block 3 Residents Association chairman Rezal Sharif and area coordinator Sulaiman Udabderin about the flats’ overall maintenance needs.

Resident Danish Naufal, whose unit’s zinc roof was displaced during the storm, said there were currently no leakages during heavy rains.

“I hope the building would be repainted soon for a fresh look,” he said.
