Registration for the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2025 will close at midnight on Oct 15.

With more than 20,000 runners signed up, PBIM 2025 chairman Wong Hon Wai is expecting a strong final push, especially in the 10km category.

As of Monday at noon, 3,924 runners had registered for the full marathon, 9,010 for the half marathon and 7,115 for the 10km run.

Those participating are from 56 countries, with the top three being Indonesia, Singapore and China.

Of the total number of runners registered, 45% are from Penang, 48% from other parts of Malaysia while the balance are international athletes.

“We are expecting last-minute registrations.

“So, to all the runners, keep training and stay healthy.

“We look forward to welcoming you on Dec 14 with better facilities, smoother race operations and an even more rewarding experience,” Wong said during a press conference held at Komtar.

Organised by the Penang government, PBIM 2025 will be hosted at Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan.

This year, Proton joined the event as the official car partner and title sponsor of the 10km category, alongside Aspen-Klippa’s continued support.

The sponsorship includes a brand-new Proton S70 as the grand prize for the run’s lucky draw, exclusively for runners who finish the race.

Proton’s e.MAS will also serve as the official lead car, assisting with route coordination and showcasing sustainable mobility innovation.

Wong, who is also Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman, said the new features will enhance the race experience which includes an expanded layout, clearer category zones, and a structured wave release system for a smoother staggered start.

The Race Village will offer shaded seating, hydration points, medical and recovery areas for post-run comfort.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said PBIM had become an iconic event that showcased Penang’s capability in hosting world-class sports tourism, while boosting the economy in Seberang Perai, especially Batu Kawan.

Proton sales head Ong Chee Wooi added that the Proton S70 grand prize reflects the company’s confidence in PBIM’s reach and impact.

He called it a valuable platform for community engagement and brand collaboration.

Aspen group president and chief executive officer Datuk M. Murly said, “Aspen is proud to champion PBIM, an event that celebrates athletic excellence while supporting local communities in Batu Kawan and across Penang.

“Driven by our belief in the power of state-corporate collaboration, which last year set a good example of what can be achieved, we are glad to see more corporate sponsors joining in this year.

“Alongside our partners, Klippa and Ikea, we envision Aspen Vision City and even the wider Batu Kawan area as a vibrant new city that celebrates sports, culture, and community, while driving meaningful economic and social impact.”

A Klippa/Ikea spokeperson added, “The positive spillover to local businesses last year, from hoteliers to F&B and retail, reinforces the value of PBIM to the wider economy.

“With Proton’s participation and the support of the Penang state government, the event will continue to elevate Seberang Perai and position Batu Kawan as a strategic venue for international sports events.”
