Deepavali spirit lights up George Town’s Little India

Little India in Penang is buzzing with activity as Deepavali approaches.

THE heart of George Town is stirring to life as the Deepavali season approaches.

Saree shops, jewellers, eateries and sweets stalls in Little India are bustling with a steady crowd spurred by the festive spirit.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, 67 temporary stalls have been set up in conjunction with Deepavali which would be celebrated on Oct 20, said Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Penang president S. Parthiban.

He said business has picked up this year, adding that it would gain momentum as the festival draws close.

Parthiban said traders were required to observe guidelines set by Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

“These include ensuring stalls do not obstruct traffic or pedestrian walkways, keeping within the approved size limits, and refraining from encroaching into neighbouring premises.

“Deepavali is a festival of light and joy, so it is essential that stallholders maintain harmony and respect one another, especially in the crowded spaces where stalls are set up side by side,” he said.

He called on all operators to observe courtesy and good neighbourliness thereby creating a friendly and cooperative environment for both traders and visitors alike.

Cleanliness, he highlighted, was just as important.

“A clean and well-maintained festive bazaar reflects positively on the entire community.

“Traders have a responsibility to keep their surroundings tidy and to dispose of waste responsibly,” he added.

Parthiban said price fairness was another key concern, as many families were still facing financial challenges.

“We urge all traders to price their goods reasonably.

“Fair pricing will encourage more shoppers to visit, benefitting both sellers and customers,” he said.
