MPAJ’s RM185mil allocation for 2026 includes nurturing sporting talent

Hasrolnizam: MPAJ funds will support sports workshops, coaching and technical training.

AN ESTIMATED RM185mil in revenue for 2026 will be channelled into community sports, facility upgrades and essential services in Selangor’s Ampang Jaya municipality.

Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari (pic) said while most would go towards maintenance and departmental needs, provisions would be made for sports development to nurture local talent.

“Besides strengthening our current services which directly affect stakeholders, such as maintenance, we are also allocating a special budget for sports development.

“We are allocating RM500,000 to promote grassroots sports such as sepak takraw, netball, table-tennis and lawn bowling,” he said after chairing the local council’s full board meeting at Menara MPAJ.

The allocation, Hasrolnizam said, was not only to organise sports competitions but also to support workshops, coaching and technical training.

“These sports have good potential but there are limited opportunities.

“If participants are motivated and active, we can develop home-grown athletes,” he added.

Hasrolnizam noted, however, that much of MPAJ’s annual budget was tied up with management and basic operational costs, leaving little surplus for new development projects.

“As an alternative, we are using other accounts to upgrade facilities,” he said.

Among the upcoming projects are the refurbishment of an ageing food court in Taman Melawati as well as several community halls, with estimated costs ranging between RM2mil and RM5mil.

The local council will also continue to upgrade recreational and sports facilities next year.

“This year alone, we managed to carry out works at 18 open spaces, including football fields,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hasrolnizam said MPAJ recorded a 22.69% rise in assessment tax collection this year, with RM88.7mil collected as of Aug 31.

This is a RM16.4mil increase in collection compared to the same period last year, he added.

Based on MPAJ’s 2025 Budget, the local council aims to collect RM93mil in current assessment tax.

During the meeting, Hasrolnizam also announced that several MPAJ department directors would return to their original portfolios effective Oct 1.

Johari Atli will resume his post as Legal Department head, while Marlina Mohamad returns to Licensing and Entrepreneurial Development.

Addy Hissham Elias will once again lead the Enforcement Department.

The earlier reshuffle was carried out in January this year.
