GEORGE TOWN: Among Malaysia's oldest private sporting institutions, the Penang Sports Club (PSC), will celebrate its 90th anniversary with a year-long calendar of sporting, community and heritage events aimed at engaging members and the wider public.
The celebrations, running from July this year to June next year, will feature signature events including an Open Day, jogathon, international tennis tournament, Soccer 7's tournament and a grand anniversary dinner, while the club will also launch a corporate partnership programme to mark the milestone.
Established in 1936 through the amalgamation of the Penang Cricket Club and Penang Golf Club, PSC traces its sporting heritage to organised cricket matches held at the Penang Esplanade in 1863.
PSC president Dr Koay Teng Hin said the anniversary was more than a celebration of the club's history.
"For 90 years, Penang Sports Club has brought people together through sport, friendship and community.
"As we celebrate this significant milestone, we honour the generations who built this club while looking ahead to an exciting future.
"Our 90th anniversary is not only a celebration of our past but also an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, inspire future generations and continue contributing to Penang's sporting and social landscape," he said.
One of the key highlights will be the PSC Open Day on Oct 31, when the club will open its doors to the public.
Visitors will be able to tour the club's facilities, learn about its history, try selected sports through introductory sessions and enjoy its dining outlets.
Other major events include the Dance Extravaganza Night on Nov 28, the Grand New Year Dinner cum 90th Anniversary Celebration on Dec 31.
Next year, there will be the 90th Anniversary Jogathon on Jan 30, the PSC International Invitational Tennis Tournament from April 1 to 4 and the Soccer 7's Tournament from April 9 to 11.
More programmes, including a Members' Day Food and Fun Fair and a badminton tournament, would be announced later.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, PSC is also inviting organisations to participate through its 90th Anniversary Corporate Partnership Programme, offering sponsorship opportunities and year-round brand exposure across the various events.
The club said the initiative also reflects corporate support for sporting excellence, community engagement and the preservation of Penang's sporting heritage.
Today, PSC has 11 sporting sections comprising football, hockey, cricket, tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, snooker, darts, hash and karaoke, serving as a sporting and social hub for members and their families.
