Cooking up recipe for peace of mind in nature

Fatiha loves solo camping because it allows her to do some soul searching while reconnecting with nature.

ALONE time surrounded by nature is important to Fatiha Bidin to restore her mind after a gruelling week.

“I enjoy the tranquillity and serenity,’’ said the 33-year-old account executive at a construction firm.

From her home in Subang Jaya, she’ll pack up her camping gear and leave on a Friday to return on a Sunday all refreshed for another working week.

“I love walking around and exploring while enjoying the beauty and sounds of waterfalls and streams.”

And the best part of her weekend getaway, she said, is cooking while camping.

“I prepare all the ingredients and cook up a feast at the campsite.”

Her adventure photos can be found at her TikTok account, Budak Budu.

“I love budu (fermented fish sauce) so that is why I am a budak budu.”

Unlike most campers, Fatiha’s meals are composed of rice and dishes, not your normal camping fare.

On occasion, her friends accompany her, and she’ll cook for them.

“If I am alone and there are other campers around, I will share my food with them,’’ said Fatiha who is from Johor Baru.

She took up camping last year and estimated that she had spent RM4,000 building up her gear over time.

The most important component, of course, is her camping kitchen.

She is now hooked on camping because she can enjoy two of her favourite hobbies – exploring nature and cooking.

“When I am camping and cooking and taking in the beauty of nature, I also self-reflect and think about my future.

“Camping amid the beauty of nature gives me clarity and peace of mind for planning.”

Her favourite camping site is Kampung Beswok in Sungai Siput, Perak which is managed by the Orang Asli.

They ensure the area remains in its natural state.

The streams and waterfalls are very beautiful and clean, she added.

While her friends support her hobby, Fatiha finds that there are also those, including relatives, who tell her it’s not safe to wander around alone in the jungle.

“I tell them not to worry as these campsites are properly managed and the owners keep an eye on us.”

Having said that, Fatiha has planned more camping trips till the end of 2025.
