The basement carpark at Lagoon Perdana Apartment was inundated in 2022.
The RM3.5mil flood-mitigation project in PJS 9, Bandar Sunway in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, particularly in the vicinity of Lagoon Perdana Apartment, will address recurring flooding in the area.
It will be carried out in two phases and the cost of the project is being borne by property developer Kiranamaz Property Sdn Bhd.
The company has a residential development project near the apartment complex.
The first phase of the project, which began on Aug 28 and is estimated to cost RM500,000, includes upgrading 138m of the apartment’s drains and the construction of a cascading drain.
The second phase involves road and drainage upgrading works along Jalan PJS9/1 that leads to Sungai Klang, as well as the construction of an on-site detention tank with a provisional capacity of 1,673 cubic metres to store stormwater.
This upgrade, estimated at RM3mil, is part of the condition for the approval given for the Kiranamaz development.
Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng said the first phase would take about three months, while the entire project was expected to be completed together with the residential development in about two years.
“The upgrading works will benefit 3,322 apartment units, 2,401 of which are at the Lagoon Perdana Apartment, as well as 142 shop lots along Jalan PJS9/1.
“Floods have been a persistent problem for the Lagoon Perdana Apartment residents whenever there is a downpour, where the basement parking lot gets flooded.
“The most severe incidents occurred in 2021 and 2022, damaging vehicles and shops.
“The primary cause of the flooding is the inability to discharge water when the river is at full capacity,” Ng said during a press conference at the apartment.
Joint Management Committee (JMC) member Malkit Singh hopes that the project will address the flood problem at the apartment.
“Some of the residents are afraid to go on vacation as they fear floods will damage their vehicles in the parking lot.
“Although there has not been flooding as severe as the 2022 incident, we hope that the flood mitigation can solve this problem at the apartment once and for all,” he said.
Also present were Subang Jaya city councillor Tah Yap Keong and apartment JMC chairman Hashimah Hashim.
