A TOTAL of 125 Malaysians have been awarded the Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) this year to pursue academic degrees or short-term Mandarin courses in Taiwan.
Over 200 recipients and their families attended the scholarship award ceremony by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia (Teco), held at a mall in Kuala Lumpur.
In her opening remarks, Teco representative Phoebe Yeh said these scholarships have been offered since 2004.
“We hope awardees take this opportunity to expand their knowledge and broaden their horizons during their time studying in Taiwan.
“The skills and expertise they obtain may serve as a bridge for enhancing the bilateral relationship between Taiwan and Malaysia,” she said.
She highlighted that Taiwan was ranked sixth among 69 major economies in the 2025 World Competitiveness Rankings by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD).
She added that Taiwan’s higher education was renowned for its R&D competitiveness, industry-academia collaboration and pioneering development in semiconductors, information technology as well as cultural and creative design industries.
Yeh said the number of HES recipients this year was 88 and they would learn Mandarin at university-affiliated language centres.
She further said Taiwan has increasing number of English-taught courses being introduced in universities and colleges.
A total of 37 students were awarded the MOE Taiwan Scholarship where five would be pursuing doctoral degree programmes, 25 Master’s and seven Bachelor’s degrees in Taiwan.
Each scholarship recipient will be offered tuition and miscellaneous expenses of NTD40,000 (RM5,800) every semester and a monthly living allowance ranging from NTD15,000 (RM2,200) to NTD20,000 (RM2,900) per month.
The 88 recipients of HES will be awarded a monthly stipend of NTD28,000 (RM3,900) during their award period.
Additionally, five Malaysian students were awarded the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Scholarship Programme to undertake a Master’s degree in the country.
