Townhall for residents on Bukit Kiara park turns heated

AN ENGAGEMENT session intended to address a contentious tree-clearing activity on a slope in Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara turned heated, leaving some Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) residents frustrated and angered.

What was a highly anticipated briefing on reasons for the tree clearing devolved into a presentation of the construction of the four storey-building plan that was slated for the Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara Kuala Lumpur Phase 1B Administrative Building.

Residents, especially those living along Jalan Abang Haji Openg, said they were not keen on the plans and highlighted concerns about the potential soil erosion and landslides as well as the increase in temperature due to the tree clearing.

A shouting match erupted when the residents' queries were not answered by various agencies who attended the engagement session at Segambut Kuala Lumpur City Hall branch office on Thursday (July 17), including National Landscape Department (JLN), the Works Department (JKR) as well the Jaaz Architects Sdn Bhd.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh had to step in to mediate the session.

According to JLN deputy director-general Ahmad Syaharuddin Kamaruddin, the administrative building is to enable the department to better manage Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara and carry out conservation and security for the park.
