THE universal language of movement united some 150 people from all walks of life during Penang Dance Day 2025.

Young children, working adults and special needs individuals had a blast learning, practising and performing enthralling routines in diverse genres.

The highlight of the day was the gala evening performance held at Gurney Plaza which featured 17 numbers by various dance studios and collectives from around the state.

With the floor as their canvas and movements as their colours, the performers conjured one rhythmic masterpiece after another.

There were contemporary and traditional dances mixed in with creative interpretations of Latin, K-Pop, hip-hop, Odissi, belly dancing and ballet, to name a few.

Enlivened by vibrant costumes and props, each segment exuded joy and emotion. Some even highlighted poignant themes such as community, festivity and the human spirit.

The showcase on April 27 was greeted with loud cheers and applause from family members, friends and shoppers watching at the mall’s main atrium.

It was jointly organised by Penang Art District (PAD) and Penang Performing Arts Link (Pearl) in celebration of International Dance Day which falls on April 29 every year.

PAD general manager Kenny Ng said this year’s theme of “Penang Dances with the World” celebrates how dance transcends borders, cultures and generations.

“Dance is a celebration of life that connects us across our differences and inspires new possibilities.

“This is an invitation for everyone to celebrate movement, creativity and strength of human connection,” Ng said in his opening address.

Pearl founder Aida Redza said this was the 15th edition of Penang Dance Day. It began in 2010 and had been held at various venues since, except during pandemic years when it went online.

She said its themes resonated more deeply than ever, with the world currently going through challenging times.

“It’s a powerful reminder that despite hardship and turmoil, dance can serve as a universal language that unites everyone.

“Every step we take together is a call for healing and understanding. We hope these gestures and rhythms echo beyond our shores as a message of peace and unity,” she added.

Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid underlined the importance of arts and culture not only in fostering social harmony in Penang but also enhancing its tourism allure.

“Creativity is not something we keep hidden in studios or museums. Here, it spills all over our streets and festivities.

“Travellers who visit Penang don’t just want to take photographs. They come to taste, to hear, to move and to feel something that cannot be found anywhere else.

“And what better way to experience it than through a living art like dance which breathes life into our celebrations, speaks a language beyond words and welcomes everyone to understand our stories and become part of our community,” she said.

Syerleena emphasised traditional dance forms like joget which has endured for centuries but lost none of its charm.

“It echoes the spirit of our culture which is resilient, timeless and evolving.

“Shaped by history but never been broken by time, such creativity is what keeps Penang alive and thriving,” she added.

Prior to the gala, there was also a whole day’s programme of 20 dance workshops held at the campus of a nearby college.

These covered a diverse array of dance genres and were free for individuals of all ages and backgrounds, with a minimal registration fee.
