KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) is once again one of the 20 local authorities to be honoured with the Happiest City Award.

This is the second time it has secured the award in the Malaysia Happiness Index.

The first time was in 2022.

Overjoyed that Klang has been recognised once again, mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the city council owed it to the inspirational people who were making invaluable contributions in caring for the city.

“I have been told that for the 2025 Happiness Index measurement, 153 local authorities participated, and we are among the 20 happiest in the country that received the recognition in conjunction with the International Day of Happiness,” he said.

Abd Hamid received the award from Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming at an event in Putrajaya.

The Malaysian Urban Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development, also known as Murninets, measures the index through PLANMalaysia.

Abd Hamid added that the award criteria covered happiness of families, the environment, local leadership, local council services, infrastructure improvements and residents’ satisfaction in their neighbourhoods.

“I am motivated to receive this award and am committed to working harder and leading the council departments to deliver effective and efficient services to everyone in Klang.

“Our council is also working hard to alleviate problems at flood-prone areas,” he said.

Reiterating that Klang folk made the city a wonderful place to live in, Abd Hamid added that the award was a testament to their passion and innovation to bring in tourists, keep the city vibrant and improve cleanliness.

In the awards this year, Lipis and Cameron Highlands in Pahang emerged the happiest districts, while others in the running were Kuala Krai (Kelantan), Bandar Baharu (Kedah), Kuala Pilah and Jelebu (Negri Sembilan), Jerantut (Pahang) and Telupid (Sabah).

Aside from district councils, 12 cities and municipal councils also earned recognition for their commendable happiness scores.

Bintulu in Sarawak was in the top spot, followed by Temerloh (Pahang), Johor Baru (Johor), Port Dickson (Negri Sembilan), Jasin (Melaka) and Pontian (Johor).

Special mentions went to Ampang Jaya and Petaling Jaya in Selangor, Batu Pahat in Johor, Melaka City and Putrajaya.
