Bukit Kiara tourney to get local skateboarders soaring

A skateboard tournament organiser is looking for more participants for its event at Bukit Kiara Skatepark in Kuala Lumpur on April 11.

The tournament, SkateJamz organised by Pertubuhan Intelek Wawasan (Intelek) 2025 promises skateboarding action, music and community engagement, starting from 8pm to midnight.

For fans of the sport and supporters of the local skateboarding community, SkateJamz is the place to be.

The tournament is being organised by 32 semester 7 and 8 students from Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) as part of their final-year project.

It aims to elevate Malaysia’s skateboarding scene, especially for emerging talents.

The event is expected to draw 250 attendees, including skaters of all levels and those keen to experience skateboarding culture.

Project leader Muhammad Arif Ahmad Murad said there were still spots for those wanting to join the open and rookie categories.

There are three competitive events – Mini Ramp (Rookie and Open categories), Best Trick and the Cash For Tricks battle.

The grand prize for the open mini ramp category is RM1,000 plus a skateboard deck.

A pair of Makerz shoes and RM700 make-up the second prize.

The third-place winner will receive RM600 along with a T-shirt or cap.

In the rookie category, the first, second and third place winners will receive RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively.

The Best Trick category will have one winner taking home RM800.

In the Cash For Tricks category will be carried out in two sessions, with each session’s winner receiving RM500 plus skateboarding shoes.

Beyond the competition, SkateJamz seeks to foster education, artistic expression and entrepreneurship.

Live demos, video screenings, and interactive installations will showcase the cultural depth of skateboarding.

Local businesses and brands will also get to engage with the community through dedicated vendor spaces.

The night will feature a VIP segment with the arrival of special guests.

These will include UPTM Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Humanities dean Dr Sangeeth Ramalingam, jurors and skateboarders Joe Ipoh and Nizar Hashim.

A closing ceremony and an award presentation will also be held.

Participation is free. For more details, call Arif Murad at 011-6550 3004.
