A partnership has been inked to strengthen safety awareness in communities via a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme providing emergency response training.

The programme aims to enhance public safety by providing accessible training sessions, workshops and awareness campaigns to equip individuals with critical life-saving skills, including first aid and firefighting.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Alliance For A Safe Community (Ikatan) and Academy of Safety and Emergency Care (Asec) was signed by Ikatan chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Asec chief executive officer Wong Wee Zhee.

Lee said the two organisations shared a common responsibility to serve the community through their corporate social platforms.

“This collaboration is crucial for occupational safety and health.

“It is a moral obligation which we can do to help the community,” he said.

He added that it was vital for organisations to work together to build a safer, more prepared society.

Wong said the partnership would allow Asec to share its expertise in emergency response training with a wider audience.

The CSR programme includes hands-on training for residents, featuring workshops on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic first aid, fire safety, and disaster readiness.

Other public awareness campaigns will also be part of the initiative.

Before the MOU signing, Ikatan’s mental well-being lead trainer Ko Teik Yen conducted a two-hour mindfulness session attended by 30 Asec personnel.

Ikatan is also known for promoting mental health education and awareness at community level.

Asec, a HRD Corp-registered provider established in 2004 with its headquarters in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, has trained over 350,000 emergency responders in Malaysia.

It is also the first training centre in South-East Asia to offer multiple internationally recognised National Fire Protection Association-compliant courses.

The CSR programme, which started in 2010, aims to help Malaysians prepare for emergencies at home and in their communities.

Through this initiative with Ikatan, Wong said they aimed to foster a culture of safety and readiness within the community by extending Asec’s expertise in first aid and emergency response to a wider audience.
