Ex D-G shares experience as Selangor Bomba honours retirees at inaugural event

Some 500 Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) retirees had a reunion of sorts at its first appreciation event celebrating their years of service.

Held at the department’s headquarters in Shah Alam, Selangor, the event offered a chance for these dedicated servicemen to reconnect and reflect on their shared experiences.

One of the attendees was former Bomba director-general Datuk Soh Chai Hock.

He spoke fondly of the strong camaraderie within the department during his years of service.

Soh, who held the helm between 1995 and 1999, recalled that there was no divisiveness in the department as everyone had deep respect for the guidance provided by their superiors.

“That was how we were able to revamp the department from just firefighting to include rescue work on land, water and air,” he said.

“The Highland Tower tragedy in 1993 was the turning point for the department.

“We had never seen a disaster of that magnitude and did not have the expertise, nor the proper equipment for the rescue work,” said Soh.

“We only had ladders, ropes and some machinery!

“However, with the help of rescue teams from other countries, we persevered and completed all missions,” he said.

“From then onwards, the department worked on the need for improved disaster response capabilities, better training, and specialised units to handle complex emergencies,” he added.

Selangor Bomba director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said he was happy with the turnout and hoped for more of such similar events.

“The present officers must show appreciation for those who came before them.

“They have paved the way for the current generation, and it is important to honour their legacy.

“Their hard work and dedication have contributed to the growth and success of the department, and recognising their efforts helps to ensure their achievements are never forgotten,” said Wan Md Razali.

Also present was Bomba fire safety division director Datuk Khirudin Drahman @ Hussaini.

He spoke about the department’s emphasis on the role of the public, advising that people cannot solely rely on the firemen.

“We aim to reach people before a fire happens.

“The first five minutes are the people’s responsibility and I always stress the importance of not panicking.

“It’s up to you to assess the situation and act accordingly to prevent the fire from escalating,” he elaborated.

Khirudin said many of the department’s community engagement programmes had received strong support from government-linked companies.

Pointing out that negligence, and unsafe acts and conditions lead to disasters, he urged everyone to take responsibility in ensuring safety at all times.

“Firefighting is a losing battle. The focus should be on precaution, prevention and protection.

“Every individual needs to act like a firefighter and remain calm,” he said.
