Twins revive musical dream

TWINS Han and Anyi Wong are out to reignite their careers as musical artistes in the United Kingdom after their budding journey was derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 21-year-old Wong siblings started composing since they were 15 and had published their first extended play (EP) “Life Sketches”, which featured six songs, in 2021.

Their Ipoh-born father Dr Wong Gen Tat, said after the pandemic, both children had paused their musical endeavour to continue their studies.

Han is pursuing medicine at Oxford University while Anyi is studying biology at Keele University.

“They thought their musical career would launch after the EP.

“They had been invited to perform at events and had even been interviewed by the BBC,” said the Manchester-based general practitioner in an interview.

He said the twins, who were born in Manchester, knew they needed more exposure through live performances but the pandemic struck.

“They were quite disappointed and told me that they would pursue it (music) as a hobby,” he added.

Dr Wong, who is in Ipoh, Perak for the Chinese New Year holidays, said both his children would play around with new song ideas whenever they were back home for the term break.

“In October last year, they began to work on a new song called Normie.

“It is an interesting song about their life experiences while studying in their respective universities and how young people face issues of mental health and racism.

“I hope that it will kick-start their musical career once again,” he added.

Dr Wong said Anyi is the face of the pair while Han is more like the person in the background.

“She is the vocalist for the group who also handles their promotion while Han manages and produces their songs.

“Anyi’s been doing a lot of short videos of song covers on their social media to generate interest,” he said, adding that both complement each other well as a team.

“They are influenced by pop music like those of Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter as well as world music, and incorporate a variety of instruments into their songs.

“My job is to drive them around and carry their instruments while providing support,” he said in jest.

As for their dream, Dr Wong said Anyi had during the interview with BBC expressed wanting to play in front of a 5,000-strong audience.

“While I would advise them to have their feet firmly on the ground, I would also not put a ceiling and restrict their ambitions.

“The plan is to do another EP, so hopefully they can come out with more songs in the next 12 months,” he said.

Dr Wong said he was extremely proud of his children and supportive of their musical career.

“As someone from South-East Asia, there are a bit of mixed feelings but I am proud that they can juggle between their studies and music,” he said.
