AS A resident of Ayer Itam in Penang, I am appreciative of proactive actions taken by Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to prevent water shortages in Ayer Itam and its surrounding areas.
I am grateful for the frequent updates by the PBAPP chief executive officer on the water situation as reported in StarMetro on Jan 7, “Dam action plan sustained to avoid water shortage”.
It is likely we will continue to face potential water shortages as Air Itam Dam has not been expanded for six decades.
This is especially so bearing in mind the vast development taking place in the area extending from Paya Terubong and the township of Bandar Baru Air Itam, commonly known as Farlim, adding tens of thousands of residents.
A major project recently opened with a shopping centre, 30-storey condominium block of 270 residential units, 18-storey hotel of 289 rooms and 18-storey office.
Currently under construction too are two blocks of 39 storeys with 646 residential units.
Also launched recently is another project comprising 280 residential units.
Taking these projects as an example, I wonder whether the authorities, especially PBAPP, have taken into consideration whether Air Itam Dam can continue to meet the water needs of residents in Ayer Itam/Paya Terubong.
Or will we have to put up with potential water shortages every now and then?
