ADORNED with over 500 lanterns, the Swee Nyet Keung Temple has become a focal point of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Radiating joy and hope, the lanterns help devotees usher in the Year of the Snake that has started a new cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar.

Temple caretaker Chong Choon Lim, 59, who has maintained the sacred site for nearly two decades, described the lanterns as more than just decorative items.

He explained that these symbolise unity, faith and the community spirit that is embodied in every step of the celebration.

“We expected the number of lanterns hung to exceed 500,” he said as reported by Bernama.

Chong also introduced LED lanterns for more colour as well as a brighter, and more cheerful effect.

His efforts complement the significance of Swee Nyet Keung Temple which he explained is a hub for over 1,000 visitors from within and outside the district.

“Most of the decorations, like the lanterns and flowers, are contributions from the local community.

“This reflects the spirit of cooperation that remains alive in our society.

“It also strengthens our bond as everyone plays a role in brightening up the temple,” he explained.

As the caretaker, Chong ensures the site’s cleanliness and sense of tranquillity that is sought by visitors.

“I make sure that the temple is always clean and orderly.

“To me, this temple is a sanctuary that brings peace to the soul, and I want visitors to feel comfort and serenity when they come here.

“With so many lanterns lighting up the night sky, this year’s Chinese New Year celebration will be even more meaningful,” he said.
