S’gor to focus on high-value agro products

The Selangor Agricultural Transformation Plan (PeTA), implemented to ensure food security, will prioritise modern and high-value agriculture projects next year.

State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the plan, currently in the final phase of its first stage, is focused on agricultural products with strong market demand to boost farmers’ income.

“The state will focus on high-value agricultural products such as melons, vanilla and onions next year – all of which have shown strong market demand.

“We want to ensure these products are consistently available in the market.

“So far, Phase I of PeTA has been a success and we will build on this achievement,” he said after presenting aid for the Urban Farming and Community Garden programme at Kampung Pandan Dalam, Ampang Jaya.

Izham said Selangor has over 200 registered community gardens.

A total of RM450,000 was allocated to 30 community gardens and six local councils where RM50,000 was given to each council while community garden representative received RM5,000 each.

Izham said Phase II of PeTA, beginning in 2026, would focus on animal husbandry and seed development.

Key initiatives included rearing Barbados Black Belly sheep, lobster farming and onion cultivation.

“This effort will ensure food supply continuity,” he said.

Challenges faced by the sector in Selangor, he added, included the lack of breed stock and seeds.

Izham said that the state would focus on overcoming those issues.

PeTA was launched in 2022 to secure food supply.

The initiative also aligns with the National Food Security Policy Action Plan 2021–2025 to increase agricultural output.
