Works Ministry wins bid for technical study on Labuan-Sabah bridge

KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry will be carrying out a half million ringgit technical study on the proposed bridge between Labuan and Menumbok, Sabah.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic) said the funds are expected to be disbursed early next year.

“In the meantime, we will also look into other ways to improve connectivity in Labuan,” she said when met on Monday (Nov 11).

On April 30, Dr Zaliha was reported as saying that the Works Ministry was bidding for an allocation to carry out a technical study on the proposed project.

"We need it to ensure, for example, if it is really feasible and how much is the expected budget if we want to build the bridge,” she had said.

Plans to build a bridge linking the island to the Sabah mainland have been mooted several times over the years.

In 2020, then Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said it would be built through a private finance initiative.

He said his ministry and the Works Ministry were in the process of finalising the terms of reference for the “request for proposal process to build the bridge.
