Flash floods hit Klang after heavy rain

FLASH floods hit several parts of Klang this Wednesday afternoon, with videos circulating on social media that captured above ankle-deep level of deluge that slowed traffic.

It caused water to flow into car porches and kitchen areas of many houses.

Intense rain had begun at 1.30pm and subsided at about 3.30pm.

In one video, on Facebook, Ashton Luke Alexander shared flood waters on the main road in Taman Seri Andalas above ankle deep and each time vehicles passed by it created a wave-like movement that caused water to enter people’s car porches.

Klang Municipal City Council enforcement chief Andry Arman Masrom said the Swift Action Task Force (Pantas), which handles emergencies said several neighbourhoods saw drains overflowing.

“Areas, that were affected by the deluge were Taman Palm Grove, Taman Chi Liung, Taman Bayu Perdana and part of Taman Chi Liung. Trees had fallen in Pandamaran and Jalan Penghulu Abu Bakar in Kampung Jawa,” he said.

Andry said his men used a chainsaw to cut the fallen tree at Jalan Penghulu Abu Bakar into manageable sizes and removed the remaining debris that was obstructing part of the road.

“No casualties were reported in the incident,” he said.

Resident Selvaraju Ponnusamy said motorists, on seeing the water levels at ankle high, made several diversions into the neighbourhoods to escape the traffic snarl.

“The main monsoon drain along Persiaran Seraya in Taman Chi Liung had not overflowed” said Selvaraju.

A video by KKDevan showed part of Jalan Tengku Kelana in Klang’s Little India was hit by flash floods.

Devan said the deluge was at the road kerb level and water did not flow into the shops.

Pedestrians were forced to take shelter on higher pavements along the shops to avoid the floodwaters.

At Jalan Pulasan and Lorong Rembau an alley in Little India a low-lying area, water was seen reaching the undercarriage of cars parked on the roadside.
