RESIDENTS in Machang Bubuk and Bukit Tambun state constituencies have joined hands in making giant puppets to express their stories through art and display them for the upcoming George Town Festival.

Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon said communities, namely from Taman Sri Janggus in Machang Bubuk and Ban Liau in Bukit Tambun, had been roped in for the four-month community outreach project.

He said they participated in a six-day workshop to make the giant puppets using eco-friendly materials such as cardboard, old newspapers, bamboo and fabric scraps at the Taman Sri Janggus community hall.

The giant puppets will be paraded from the community hall to his service centre in Alma from 8am to 10am today.

On Sunday, the puppets will feature in another parade from Penang Youth Centre to Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park in George Town, from 10am to 11am.

“This project invites the community to become creators, collectively exploring and expressing their stories through art.

“These artistic expressions will not only be displays representing the community but also aim to establish and strengthen a deep sense of community identity.

“I believe art and engagement can be great tools to voice personal emotions, local connections, community needs and social issues,” said Lee in a statement.
