Vandalised water fountain for cats replaced ahead of feline park opening

A new cat water fountain has been installed at Catopia, a park for felines in Shah Alam, Selangor, to replace the one that was vandalised before it opens on Thursday (July 4).

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) corporate communications department director Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said unscrupulous people had "ripped out the fountain fixture" from the casing, rendering the fountain, which cost RM1,500, useless.

"The fountain seems to be an attractive target for vandals so we may move the fountain to the centre of the park," he said.

Mohd Azhar said those who vandalised the cat park, located at Persiaran Bandar Raya in Section 14, had jumped over the one metre-high fence surrounding it.

"MBSA's landscape department opted for fences just above waist height to create a more inviting atmosphere.

"Because this place is quiet at night, it is vulnerable to vandalism," he said.

He added that it was not a new issue as public toilets at other parks had been vandalised and MBSA was keen to stamp out such anti-social behaviour.

"Money for the replacement could have been used to improve the park," said Mohd Azhar.

He said MBSA was mulling installing closed-circuit television cameras at the park, which could deter vandals.
