TO promote sustainable practices, Sime Darby Property held its “Jom Raya Go Green – Let’s Celebrate Raya Sustainably” initiative, marking its largest fabric collection drive to date.

Held at The Glades Plaza in Subang Jaya, Selangor, the drive received good response from nearby communities with fabric items filling up collection bins before noon.

Notable personalities including Dr Soo Wincci, actress Yasmin Hani and singer Atilia Haron also attended.

To encourage sustainable practices during Ramadan in other Sime Darby townships, drives were held concurrently at Serenia City Sales Gallery, KL East Mall and KL East Sales Gallery.

Participants at all the drives were encouraged to donate preloved and unwanted clothing and fabrics.

They were each given a storage container from Tupperware Brands Malaysia as a token of appreciation.

The drives were held to encourage communities to address textile waste.

Sime Darby Property aims to collect 72 tonnes of recyclable materials by year’s end as part of its effort to reduce waste in landfills.

Chief marketing and sales officer Datuk Lai Shu Wei said, “Ramadan is a month traditionally focused on mindful consumption and presents the perfect opportunity to champion sustainable practices.

“In reducing a major contributor to environmental pollution, we believe the fabric collection drive can promote a circular economy for textiles, extending their lifespan and minimising their carbon footprint.”

He also highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

To give the collected fabrics a second life, they will undergo filtration and processing by Kloth Circularity, a social enterprise that has recycled over 4,000 tonnes of textiles and clothing since 2018.

The recycled materials will then be distributed to those in need or upcycled into new and unique items.

“Upcycling fabrics is a responsible way to manage clothing and textiles.

“It supports local businesses and allows for creative expression, all while saving the planet.

“This initiative recognises that mindful consumption and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with cherished Raya traditions,” added Lai.

By integrating sustainability into festive celebrations, Sime Darby Property hopes to inspire people to make more conscious choices towards a greener future.

Other community-building activities by the developer include “Jom Masak and Distribute Bubur Lambuk”, “Jom Sahur Together” and “Jom Shopping Raya Bazaar” at Putra Heights, KL East, Bandar Bukit Raja, Subang Jaya City Centre and Nilai Impian.
