ABOUT 100 people attended an Environment Day event at International Sikh Centre@Khalsa Land in Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor.

Themed “Celebrating Creation”, the event was to create awareness of our connection to nature and the need to live in harmony with the environment.

Organiser Jaskirat Kaur from Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia, said widespread improvements started with the individual.

“The objective of the event is to highlight the many small steps we can all take in our daily lives,” she said.

The day kicked off with a sharing session on how human actions are causing so much damage to Mother Nature before community leaders took part in an Amazing Race-style event.

At one of the five race stations, participants had the opportunity to see for themselves flowering and fruiting trees, and learn the basics of tree planting and plant health.

The composting masterclass was insightful, with many keen to try out the techniques at home and in Sikh community kitchens.

Next, recipes were shared to make organic self-care products using simple kitchen ingredients.

Minimalist life-hacks to promote responsible consumption were also shared.

Throughout the event, facilitators reminded participants of the impact of individual actions on climate change and sustainability.

For example, participants enjoyed an eco-friendly approach to dining during the communal meal of vegetarian nasi lemak served on banana leaf.

This emphasised food sustainability, single-use materials, water conservation and reducing the use of detergent.

The event culminatd with participants making a collective pledge towards environmental protection, promising to make a positive impact in their homes and communities.
