Kampung fare served with city flair

Flock’s ‘Bazar Malam’ buffet serves up a spread of traditional Malay dishes.

DURING Ramadan, Malaysians tend to look forward to the seasonal food bazaars that spring up.

The sights, sounds and smells at these bazaars take visitors on a sensorial journey.

W Kuala Lumpur’s Flock seeks to replicate this experience albeit in a posh setting.

Its culinary team, headed by executive chef Haznizam Hamzah and executive sous chef Suhaimi Md Tasir, has curated a menu to give guests a “Bazar Malam” feel at the hotel’s pan-Asian grill restaurant.

The restaurant offers a wide selection of grilled items, namely beef, lamb, chicken and seafood that are accompanied by a variety of sauces.

Haznizam said guests could expect a sumptuous spread comprising Malaysian favourites.

“The satay is a must-try.

“There is also otak-otak and satar ikan,” he said.

The meal kicks off with a variety of ulam and kerabu (traditional salads).

“There is a variety of traditional Malay dishes, which we call ‘Dapur Kampung’, where you can get items like Udang Harimau Masak Lemak, Pucuk Paku Goreng Belacan, Asam Pedas Telur Mayong and Ayam Kalio.

“There is also Nasi Kukus Bunga Telang that can be savoured with sides like Ayam Goreng Berempah, Udang Sambal Bunga Kantan and Sayur Goreng Jawa,” he said.

One of the special items this year is mee rebus, a famous dish from Johor.

“Instead of using sliced beef, we are using tender Angus beef short ribs,” said Haznizam.

“Another must-try item is the bao filled with pulled wagyu beef brisket,” he said.

The bubur lambuk is made with beef, just like how it is traditionally made.

“We also have sup ekor and sup urat for soup lovers,” he added.

A food bazaar for Malaysians would not be complete without Chinese and Indian dishes.

Those wanting Indian flavours can look forward to briyani and naan selections served with tandoori meat dishes and lamb shank gravy.

For those who fancy Chinese fare, there are street favourites like char kuey teow, radish cake and dim sum, among others.

For dessert, there is a variety of Malay kuih and sweet treats including warm serawa durian and bubur kacang merah that are sure to win hearts.

Besides cakes, cookies and puddings, there is a selection of house-made ice-creams in assorted flavours that’s perfect to cool down during these hot days.

The Ramadan promotion is available until April 8.

It is priced at RM288nett per adult and RM144nett per child between six and 12 years old. Children below six can eat for free with one paying adult.
