A total of 154 incidents of floods were reported in Perak last year, says Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

The state infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman said from those figures, a total of 27 incidents of flooding were reported in the Larut, Matang and Selama districts.

He said a total of 109 incidents occurred at the hotspot areas, while 45 incidents occurred at new locations in the state.

“As for the Larut, Matang and Selama districts, 21 incidents occurred at hotspot areas, while six cases were at new locations,” he said when replying to a question by Ong Seng Guan (PH-Pokok Assam) at the state assembly sitting on Wednesday (Feb 28).

Ong has asked about the number of flood incidents in the state, especially in the Larut, Matang and Selama districts.

He also wanted to know whether the floods occurred in the hotspot areas or at new locations, and the state government’s plans this year to address the flood issue at the locations.

Mohammad Nizar said for the short and medium-term plans, the Irrigation and Drainage Department would carry out periodic maintenance work.

“The works include maintaining all pumps, and rivers under the department’s purview at hotspot areas, as well as low-risk areas that are maintained one-off based on the approved allocation.

“As for the long-term plans, the department has applied for allocation in the 12th Malaysia Plan, and has also made applications in the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan,” he added
