Seven food handlers in Taman Klang Utama issued compounds for not having typhoid jabs

Klang Municipal Council Health Department health inspectors check the washing area of a restaurant at Taman Klang Utama.

SEVEN food handlers in three Taman Klang Utama restaurants were warned by Klang Municipal Council (MPK) for not being vaccinated against typhoid.

MPK Health Department director Azmi Muji said out of the seven, four were foreigners and all had been told to immediately get vaccinated.

"Our team of nine health inspectors headed by senior health inspector Zakaria Ismail conducted checks at Solok Sungai Keramat 10C/KU6, following complaints that restaurants were discarding food leftovers into back lane drains," he said.

Under the Food Handlers MPK Bylaw 2007, typhoid vaccination is compulsory every three years for those handling food.

"All food handlers must be vaccinated against typhoid, including restaurant owners, hawkers, canteen operators, stall owners and any worker who handles food," he added.

Azmi said eatery owners who had not equipped their food handlers suitable gear when preparing or serving food were also issued compounds.

"We issued a total of RM8,250 compound fines to all three restaurants for offences including not using aprons, disposal gloves and hairnets, not having grease traps and causing an obstruction by placing racks on the five-foot-way.

"One outlet was also operating without a business licence," he said.

Azmi warned that the premises faced closure if the level of hygiene was not satisfactory during the council’s check next week.
