TAIWAN’s Taichung City Agriculture Bureau and Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City are set to promote their sweet and juicy ponkan (mandarin orange) to Malaysians.

Taichung ponkan will be available nationwide at various stores including Aeon, MBG Fruit Shop, Whole Foods Express and Star Grocer.

The bureau and association also joined hands with bakery chain RT Pastry to offer Malaysians a range of limited-edition ponkan pastries.

Shigang District Farmers’ Association marketing director Fu Yu-Chin said Malaysians could enjoy limited-edition Ponkan cheesecake, pound cake and custard from today at RT Pastry’s branch in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Taichung City Agriculture Bureau marketing and processing division chief Liao Shi-Wei said Taichung’s highland climate, clean water and good weather had led to a great harvest.

He said ponkan export to Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Brunei and Canada was expected to hit 650 metric tonnes.

“The ponkan from Shingang district is known for its beautiful colour, juiciness and sweet firm pulp, making them some of the most sought-after.

“Their flesh is the perfect balance of sweet and tanginess. The packaging has been awarded the Global Good Agricultural Practices and ISO 22000 certification,” he said at a press conference.

He said consumers should look out for the mark of quality from the bureau to enjoy original ponkan.

Malaysians will also be able to learn more about the fruit and ways to incorporate it into festive dishes, from Internet celebrity chef Mr Hong Kitchen who will launch a special video about ponkan on his YouTube channel on Jan 18.
