14 teams to vie for lion dance crown

LION dance troupes from several countries will be vying for prizes at the first Johor International Lion Dance on Stilts Competition.

Event organising chairman Datuk Teoh Boon Fooi said 14 troupes from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and France had signed up for the competition.

The inaugural competition is set to take place from Dec 29 to 31 at Sutera Mall, Johor Baru.

Winners stand to walk away with cash prizes of up to RM40,000.

“Through this competition, we hope that visitors can gain a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s rich arts and culture heritage,” he said adding this also offered visitors the opportunity to learn about Chingay and the 24 festive drums.

Teoh, who is also president of Nam Wah Kangkar Pulai Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe, thanked Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association’s (MCTA) Johor chapter and Tourism Malaysia for their support in the organisation of the event.

“Rehearsals will start on Dec 29 while the official competition will be on Dec 30 and 31, from 10am until 6pm, at the mall’s fourth floor.

“The opening ceremony will be held at noon on Dec 30,” he said adding that admission is free.
