Car manufacturer Perodua has organised a tree-planting programme at Kuala Selangor Nature Park in Selangor.
Some 120 volunteers from Perodua planted 1,700 saplings during the one-day programme.
The corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme under UMW Green Shoots Initiative began in 2021 with the aim to plant 300,000 trees by 2023.
Approximately 174,000 trees have been planted since, with the remaining trees to be planted by the end of this year.
Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, “Mangroves are a vital part of Malaysia’s ecosystem as they help protect riverside and coastal areas from danger, particularly flooding and tsunamis.
“They also protect water quality by removing pollutants from stormwater run-off before it reaches seagrass habitats and coral reefs.
“They provide a nursery for many commercial fish and shellfish, thus contributing to the local abundance of seafood.
“Given the huge benefits of mangrove trees, Perodua decided to tie up with Malaysian Nature Society for the tree-planting.”
He added that the sustainability effort would help Perodua achieve its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 15 which is “Life on Land”.
“Its objective is to stop biodiversity loss, land degradation and desertification,” said Zainal.
“It aims to promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.”
Also taking part in the tree-planting programme were group chief financial officer Noor Zakiyah Hasan and corporate relations and communications division general manager Sulasi Haji Mahadi.
