A TEAM of Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) lecturers and students organised various skill enhancement activities for children at Rumah Shalom Kids Orphanage Centre.

Led by senior lecturer Harjinder Kaur Balbir Singh, the university’s School of Marketing and Management organised the corporate social responsibility programme at the home in Bandar Puchong Jaya.

“The programme was held to impart lifelong skills to about 20 children at the centre, aged eight to 19.

“It was also aimed at giving the children an idea of what was happening outside the orphanage and help promote well-being and competence in facing the realities of life,” said Harjinder.

The day began with instilling a love for the environment and the importance of sustainability by planting and decorating their garden together.

The second activity was a game of charades and riddles.

“The children had so much fun with these activities that enhance their cognitive, team working and knowledge skills,” said Harjinder.

Next was the burger-making session.

The children were provided with ingredients such as lettuce, egg, meat patties, tomatoes, cucumber, tomato sauce and bread for the task to be completed within a specific time.

Then they were given recycled items such as egg trays, plastic bottles, straws, plastic spoons, paper cups, chopsticks, cardboard and old newspapers to design anything they wished.

“This activity basically encourages the children to work in teams and to bring out their creative skills,” said Harjinder.

The day ended with an individual drawing activity.

Prizes, including hampers, were given for every activity the children took part in.

Harjinder said feedback from the children showed they had a good time and that they looked forward to more of such programmes.
